Grand Canyon Sweeps Saturday Softball Doubleheader in Phoenix

PHOENIX— Grand Canyon University (9-11) swept a double header on Saturday from Western New Mexico (3-8) at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium. The Antelopes won the opener 3-1 and came back to take the nightcap, 11-5.

During Game One GCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind a solo home run from Randi Johns.

Meredith Drahota for Western New Mexico tied it up in the fourth with a solo home run of her own. That is how the game stayed until Malia Simmons hit an RBI single to break open the tie in the bottom of the 6th inning. Jennifer Duggin then scored on a passed ball to make it a 3-1 lead.

Megan Niver closed out the Mustangs in the 7th to preserve the victory. Niver went 7.0 allowing 3 hits and striking out 9 batters.

Game Two the 'Lopes won handedly over the Mustangs 11-5.

Simmons tossed a complete game while Nicole Seymour led the 'Lopes at the plate going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI. Every 'Lope in the game collected a hit with Christine Medrano and Michelle Farrell each chipped in two hits in the victory.

These two teams meet again at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium for a noon double header Sunday.
